about
This song was born from a friends, Taylor Abrahamse creative response to the unsustainable (for artists) practices of streaming services (how almost everyone listens to music). In Taylor's words:
"For my upcoming debut album, I want to take on the injustices of streaming platforms in a creative way.
So... for stream-able versions of my album, along with a jingle about the poor payments from streaming services, I'm including an audio track of the credits, as most credits are unknown on streaming services.
However - I want this credits track to not only acknowledge those who made the record possible, but be truly entertaining, showcase many of the talented people in my life, empower listeners with tools and info to help us get fair streaming pay, and be a chance for you to express your concerns and struggles with streaming services and what they are doing to the music industry. If you are affected by poor payouts and corruption in the streaming industry (or care about people who are), then you are perfect for this.
As a talented person in my life who has made my life brighter, I would love to have you involved in this credits track.
This shouldn’t take more than ten minutes or so to do (or as much time as you want it to), just make sure to have a lot of FUN.
Yes - I’m giving you a chance to have fun and fight the power at the same time :)"
I did also read Taylors credits on the track I sent to him, but when I got to talking about streaming services I just started rhyming, and then this tune popped into my head. I hope it makes you laugh, but also inspires you to support the artists you love by buying their music. Streaming services actually pay less than 0.1 cent per stream. It just didn't flow lyrically to sing that:)
I really appreciate the alternative that bandcamp offers to streaming, and the extra step they are taking during the COVID pandemic to wave their fees on track/album purchase on the first Friday's of the months in the spring and summer, so this song is for bandcamp.
Stay tuned for the full version (with credits') on Taylor's upcoming album.
lyrics
I just gotta, I just gotta make music
even if I very rarely get paid for it.
So please take the time,
to purchase songs online.
Bandcamp not Spotify
and here's the reason why
'Cause Amazon and Apple music don't pay shit
and other streaming services play the same tricks.
They make your money flow,
but to artists it never goes
Streaming giants will collapse
if we don't give them cash
With all this crazy shit that just keeps going round
I do my best to heal it with brand new sounds
less than one cent per stream
the residue of a rich mans dreams
To live from day to day
Artists must get paid.
